2011 AFSA Awards Program

It is time to start preparing chapter and division award packages for 2011.

Chapter Presidents:

2012 is fast approaching and that means it’s time to start drafting annual awards packages!  This is your opportunity to recognize chapter and individual accomplishments which will be recognized during the Division 89 Convention at Oklahoma City, OK on March 29-31, 2012.  The deadline for submitting packages this year will be Friday, February 24, 2012.

AFSA has revamped the Awards Program and created a new Award Nomination Form which should be used for all Chapter and Individual Nominations, with the exception for the Airman & NCO or Year still requires the use of AF Form 1206.  All award information, forms, award matrix, and nomination cover letters can be downloaded at the bottom of this page.

The criteria for submitting awards can be referenced in AFSA Manual 100-4(2) (Nov 2010).  The manual clearly illustrates the format for each award submission and description for each award category.  The Airman & NCO of the Year is limited to 35 bullets, this does not include the four category headings.  Any submission not following this format will be returned for correction(s), time permitting.  Individual pictures are NOT required to be an official AF photograph, but need to be a professional and tasteful pose.  The awards guide suggests how the individual photograph should be taken, formatted, and how many copies are required to be submitted.   Also, each chapter must attach their Quarterly A&A Reports to their COY submissions, the judges will need the reports and awards submission in order to make an informed decision.

Award submissions can either be sent via E-Mail or mail on an CD.  All submission must arrive on or before this date to afford us adequate time to have them judged, mementoes ordered, and scripts prepared for division convention.  Again, as in years past, there will be no leeway for late submissions.  All submissions must be e-mailed or postmarked on February 24, 2011 to be considered.  I intend to convene the board(s) immediately following the deadline to permit timely performance of all the related tasks.  Packages received after the suspense date will not be scored!.

NOTE:  All individual nominees must have been members of AFSA prior to 1 July of the year in which being nominated!  Therefore, make sure your nominees were members prior to this date before submitting them.

Most chapters will elect, appoint and install new officers between January 1 and April 1, 2010, so you may not be the chapter president when the packages are due.  As in the past, the chapter president holding the office for 2011 should  bear the responsibility for submitting his/her chapter’s nomination packages.  If there are any changes during this time please let me know who the new chapter president is.

Lessons Learned from past years:

Member/Airman/NCO of Year:
--Fill the award with the required number of bullet statements, remember to be specific (recruited XX members, not…assisted chapter recruiting efforts)
--Write bullets about category you are writing about, example…don't put job related bullets under AFSA contributions
--Proof read your packages (get help from others), there were numerous submission with typographical errors
--Submit deserving nominees

Chapter of the Year:
--Follow the Awards Manual format as written, some chapters didn’t read the manual fully!
--Last year there were only three submissions for the Community Service Award
--Reinforce your chapter accomplishments even though your accomplishment were written in your Quarterly Reports
--Brag about all the accomplishments and events your chapter has been involved with!

Division 89 Auxiliary Awards will be judged for calendar year 2011.  All Auxiliary Award packets, including the VAVS packets, should be mailed to Jean's address as listed in the email sent to all chapter presidents.

Again, you have to submit a package to win!!!  Award winners will be announced during the annual convention.

If there are any questions I can be contacted at the email address or by telephone in the email that was sent to each chapter president.

Thanks for everything that you do with AFSA!
Steve Zalesky
Vice President/Awards Chair, Division 89
