Members of the reserve components can currently have their retirement age reduced from age 60 by three months for each stint of 90 days on active duty. While this change was a great improvement for reserve component personnel, all service had to be acquired within one fiscal year.
If a reserve component member came onto active duty and part of their service crossed fiscal years, they would receive no credit for their service. Essentially, a member could spend 89 days in one fiscal year and 89 days in the subsequent fiscal year and receive no credit for time served on active duty. This law will correct this problem and be retroactive back to January 28, 2008, when the the age reduction bill was signed into law.
